Golf season may be winding down in the Okanagan, but the work you put in this fall and winter could make a big difference when you step back onto the course next spring.

We’re excited to announce that Tyler Kent, Physiotherapist at NEXT Clinic, is now Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Level 1 Certified and is offering golf-specific physiotherapy assessments and treatment right here in West Kelowna.

Whether you’re dealing with an injury, struggling with mobility, looking to improve your golf performance, or simply want your body to move better through your swing, a TPI Golf Screen provides a golf-specific way to identify physical limitations that may be affecting how you move on the course.

What is the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI)?

The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is dedicated to studying the relationship between how the human body moves and how that movement relates to the golf swing — something TPI refers to as the Body-Swing Connection™.

TPI’s approach looks at physical characteristics such as mobility, stability, strength and movement patterns to better understand how a golfer’s body may influence the way they swing.

In other words, sometimes what looks like a swing problem isn’t only about your swing.

Limited hip rotation, reduced thoracic mobility, difficulty separating upper- and lower-body movement, or limitations in strength, balance and stability can all influence how your body moves throughout a golf swing.

A TPI Golf Screen helps identify these physical factors so that they can be addressed through an individualized treatment and training plan.

What Happens During a TPI Golf Screen?

At NEXT Clinic, Tyler combines his physiotherapy training with the TPI physical screen to assess your body specifically through the lens of golf.

Your assessment evaluates areas such as mobility, strength, stability and overall movement quality while also considering your injury history, current symptoms and individual goals as a golfer.

The purpose isn’t to teach you a new golf swing or replace your golf professional. Instead, Tyler is looking at an important question:

Does your body have the physical capacity to perform the movements you’re asking it to make during your golf swing?

Following your assessment and TPI Golf Screen, Tyler can identify areas that may benefit from treatment or training and develop an individualized plan focused on improving mobility, strength, movement efficiency and your physical readiness for golf.

Golf Physiotherapy Isn’t Just for Injured Golfers

You don’t need to be injured to benefit from golf-specific physiotherapy.

Maybe your low back always feels tight after 18 holes. Maybe rotating in one direction feels considerably easier than the other. Perhaps you’ve lost some mobility over the years, notice yourself fatiguing toward the end of a round, or simply want to build a stronger and more resilient body for golf.

A TPI Golf Screen may be helpful for golfers looking to:

  • Address an existing golf-related injury or recurring pain
  • Identify mobility or strength limitations that may be affecting their movement
  • Improve golf-specific strength and physical capacity
  • Improve movement efficiency throughout the golf swing
  • Address physical compensations related to mobility or stability limitations
  • Build greater resilience for the repetitive demands of golf
  • Return to golf following an injury
  • Prepare their body for the upcoming golf season

And you certainly don’t need to be a scratch golfer. Golf-specific physiotherapy and TPI screening can be beneficial for golfers across a wide range of ages, abilities and handicaps.

Why Fall and Winter Are the Perfect Time to Work on Your Golf Game

In West Kelowna, our golf season eventually has to surrender to winter.

But that makes the off-season one of the best opportunities to work on your body.

During golf season, most golfers understandably want to play golf. Making meaningful changes to strength, mobility or a lingering injury can be difficult when you’re also playing multiple rounds each week.

The off-season gives us time.

Instead of waiting until your first tee time next spring to discover that your back still hurts or your hips still don’t rotate the way you’d like them to, we can identify those limitations now and spend the fall and winter working on them.

Think of it as your pre-season starting in the fall.

The goal is to arrive at that first round next spring already feeling strong, mobile and ready to play — rather than spending the first several weeks of golf season trying to get your body back into golf shape.
