Move better. Get stronger. Feel more confident in your body.

Whether you're recovering from an injury, dealing with recurring aches and pains, or simply looking to improve your strength and fitness, movement plays an important role in your overall health.

At NEXT Clinic in West Kelowna, we're excited to introduce Kinesiology services, offering personalized exercise rehabilitation, strength training, and movement-based programs designed to help you reach your goals.

But what exactly does a Kinesiologist do, and how can working with one benefit you?

What Is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. It combines knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, and exercise science to understand how the body moves and how to improve its function.

A Kinesiologist is a university-educated movement specialist who uses exercise and physical activity to help people recover from injuries, build strength, improve mobility, and optimize physical performance.

Unlike a traditional fitness program, kinesiology takes an individualized approach, considering your current abilities, injury history, physical limitations, and personal goals.

Whether you're returning to exercise after an injury or looking to take your fitness to the next level, kinesiology can help you move forward with a plan tailored to you.

What Can a Kinesiologist Help With?

Kinesiology isn't just for athletes or people recovering from injuries. It can benefit individuals of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels.

1. Injury Recovery and Active Rehabilitation

Recovering from an injury often involves more than simply reducing pain. Rebuilding strength, restoring mobility, and improving movement patterns are important parts of returning to normal activities.

A Kinesiologist can develop a progressive exercise program to support recovery from conditions such as:

  • Back and neck injuries

  • Shoulder, hip, and knee injuries

  • Muscle strains and ligament injuries

  • Sports-related injuries

  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain

  • Deconditioning following injury or inactivity

The goal is to help you regain strength, improve function, and return to the activities you enjoy.

2. Strength Training and General Fitness

You don't need to be injured to benefit from kinesiology.

Working with a Kinesiologist can be an excellent option for anyone who wants to become stronger, improve their fitness, or establish a consistent exercise routine.

Your program may focus on:

  • Building muscular strength and endurance

  • Improving cardiovascular fitness

  • Developing core strength and stability

  • Increasing flexibility and mobility

  • Improving balance and coordination

  • Learning proper exercise technique

Whether you're new to exercise or already active, having a structured program can help you train effectively and progress with confidence.

3. Chronic Pain and Movement Confidence

When you've been dealing with pain for an extended period, it's common to become hesitant about certain movements or activities.

In some cases, avoiding movement can contribute to reduced strength, stiffness, and decreased physical capacity.

Kinesiology uses gradual, individualized exercise progression to help improve strength, movement tolerance, and confidence.

Rather than focusing solely on where you experience discomfort, your Kinesiologist considers how your body moves as a whole and develops a program based on your abilities and goals.

4. Sports Performance and Injury Prevention

For active individuals in West Kelowna and the surrounding Okanagan, kinesiology can also play a valuable role in athletic performance.

Whether you enjoy golfing, skiing, snowboarding, running, cycling, or recreational sports, a Kinesiologist can help identify areas where improved strength, mobility, stability, or conditioning may benefit your performance.

Sport-specific exercise programs can help prepare your body for the physical demands of your favourite activities while addressing potential areas of weakness.

5. Healthy Aging, Balance, and Mobility

Maintaining strength and mobility becomes increasingly important as we age.

Kinesiology can help older adults improve balance, build strength, maintain independence, and feel more confident with everyday activities.

Programs can be adapted to your individual fitness level, making kinesiology accessible whether you're already active or just getting started.

Kinesiology vs. Physiotherapy: What's the Difference?

One of the most common questions we hear is how kinesiology differs from physiotherapy.

While both professions help improve physical function, their approaches and areas of practice are different.

Physiotherapy focuses on assessing and treating injuries, pain, and physical impairments. Treatment may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, education, and other rehabilitation techniques.

Kinesiology focuses primarily on movement, exercise prescription, physical conditioning, and active rehabilitation.

The two professions often work extremely well together.

For example, someone recovering from a knee injury may initially work with a Physiotherapist to address pain, mobility restrictions, and early rehabilitation. As recovery progresses, a Kinesiologist can help build strength, improve movement patterns, and prepare for a return to sport or regular exercise.

At NEXT Clinic, our multidisciplinary approach allows practitioners to collaborate when appropriate, helping patients transition between different stages of recovery and physical conditioning.

What to Expect at Your First Kinesiology Appointment

Your first Kinesiology appointment at NEXT Clinic is designed to understand where you're starting and what you'd like to achieve.

During your initial 60-minute assessment, your Kinesiologist may:

  1. Discuss your health history, current activity level, and goals.

  2. Assess relevant movement patterns, mobility, strength, and functional abilities.

  3. Identify areas that may benefit from targeted exercise.

  4. Develop an individualized exercise and rehabilitation plan.

  5. Introduce appropriate exercises and discuss your next steps.

Your program is tailored to your individual needs and can be adjusted as your strength, fitness, and confidence improve.

NEW: Small-Group Strength and Fitness Training at NEXT Clinic

In addition to individual Kinesiology appointments, we're also introducing Small-Group Strength and Fitness Training in our West Kelowna rehabilitation gym.

These sessions combine the benefits of professional exercise guidance with the motivation and accountability of working alongside others.

Unlike larger fitness classes, our small-group sessions are limited to just three participants, allowing for individualized coaching, exercise modifications, and attention to proper technique.

Our small-group program includes:

  • Six weekly sessions

  • 60 minutes per session

  • A maximum of three participants

  • Strength, mobility, stability, and functional fitness exercises

  • Professional guidance from our Kinesiologist

Introductory package: $210 + GST per person for six sessions.

Groups are formed based on participant interest and availability, with three participants required for each group.

It's a great option for friends, family members, or individuals looking to build strength and stay active in a supportive, small-group environment.

Do You Need to Be Fit to Start Kinesiology?

Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise-based services is that you need to be in good shape before getting started.

In reality, kinesiology meets you where you are.

Whether you haven't exercised in years, are returning from an injury, or already have an established fitness routine, your Kinesiologist can help develop an appropriate program for your starting point.

The focus isn't on how much you can lift or how fast you can move. It's about making meaningful, sustainable progress toward your individual goals.

Is Kinesiology Covered by Extended Health Benefits?

Some extended health insurance plans may provide coverage for kinesiology services, depending on your insurer, policy, and practitioner eligibility.

Coverage varies, so we recommend checking directly with your insurance provider before booking.
